About the Division


Engineers working in our Power Systems Engineering Division (PSED) are placed in a progressive growth environment with expectations to learn and apply advanced concepts while contributing to work in the electromagnetic transients, load flow, and stability areas, using a variety of software platforms including EMTP-RV, PSCAD, PSLF, PSS\E, MATLAB, and Python, up to a total of 20 different software platforms. This valuable experience and knowledge base is complemented by avenues to participate and contribute to prestigious industry societies and travel opportunities within the continental United States and abroad, such as Japan.

 

The ongoing modernization of the electrical grid in the United States and world-wide has created many technical challenges in the integration of renewable resources, with advanced technologies in the face of changing generation and load characteristics. Transmission planning standards continue to increase in terms of stability, reliability, and security requirements. These trends have significant impacts on the transmission and distribution system as ‘Smart Grid’ and other grid modernization related concepts are planned and incorporated. As a result, advanced skills are required to perform studies to analyze the grid and its components in terms of power engineering, software, and communications concepts.


PSED engineers work with engineers in a number of disciplines across the industry, within MEPPI, and at utilities, including: software, mechanical, civil, project, application, design, sales, substation, apparatus, planning, relay/protection, and system operating engineers. System studies require knowledge across many disciplines with background in theoretical, practical/system operations, testing, equipment design, industry standards, and software areas.

Job Description

Lead interaction and business opportunities for system studies with Electric Reliability Organizations (EROs), developers, public and investor-owned utility planning, operations, and engineering focused on system T&D studies to identify, track, and support T&D infrastructure development from early phases to implementation.  Engage and direct business for system studies in strategic T&D planning activities with EROs, developers, and public and investor-owned utilities in areas of T&D infrastructure development to operations management.

  • Lead business and technology integration initiatives with industry organizations such as regional reliability/planning organizations, the IEEE, CIGRE, EPRI, and other industry groups.
  • Engage EROs, developers, and public and investor-owned utility planning and engineering actively and routinely to direct and manage business activities.
  • Organize and manage proposal activities in response to customer specifications, RFPs / RFQs, and technical information requests.
  • Independently lead large-scale technical proposals for studies in various markets and in partnership with other firms.
  • Develop business opportunities in support of the division objectives.
  • Lead the development of technical papers and articles for publication in professional society journals and trade magazines; and for presentation at professional society meetings, industry conferences, and trade exhibitions.
  • Lead activities and expand capabilities for, and direct others in the use of, load flow and stability, electromagnetic transients (EMT), and programming software (such as Python), including enhancing the simulation and building of models for T&D equipment, including distributed energy resources, FACTS, and HVDC.
  • Support and lead generator testing, model development, and validation to standards.
  • Lead and contribute to pre-specification for T&D equipment, contributing to design-oriented parameters.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on electric power engineering, or equivalent technical discipline, and minimum 10 years’ experience in power systems studies consulting field, electric utility system planning or T&D manufacturer’s application engineering, or equivalent education and experience in areas key to position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of EROs, developers, and public and investor-owned utility business planning flow as related to initial feasibility, planning, engineering, implementation, and operations stages.
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory, compliance, and resource/capacity/strategy assessment.
  • General knowledge of asset and operations management, environmental policy, and system hardening.
  • Advanced organization, presentation, communication and technical writing skills.
  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and on several projects simultaneously.
  • Advanced computer skills with emphasis on MS Office products  Advanced knowledge of the following programs and modeling tools:
    • Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and related
    • ATP, EMTP, EMTP-RV, PSCAD, MATLAB,ASPEN, CAPE, and CDEGS
    • PSLF, PSS/E, DigSILENT, DSA Tools, Power World, and related
    • CYME, Synergi, etap, Milsoft, and Plexos
    • Economic software like PROMOD or MAPS
    • C, C++, MATLAB, Java, Perl, Python, and others
  • Advanced knowledge of industry standards and guides (NESC, NERC, IEEE, IEC, and CIGRE).

Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel domestically or internationally up to 25% of the time.
