Job Description and Requirements

Job Description

Responsible for SVC/STATCOM system design, equipment design and rating, and system configuration, including factory test and commissioning test, development, technical consultation, and leadership for power electronics based products (i.e., SVC Statcom, HVDC).  Instruct sales, engineering, and projects staff in proper power electronics design and equipment application.  Work closely with MELCO to learn how to design SVC and Statcomand HVDC requirements for functions to be performed.  Periodically work on project site locations in the United States during start-up installations.

  • Perform design studies for SVC/STATCOM systems, such as harmonic filter design, loss calculation, audible noise analysis, and control performance analysis.
  • Perform equipment design & rating calculations for SVC and STATCOM systems, including development of one-line diagram of SVC and STATCOM systems.
  • Possess good understanding of harmonics and harmonic filtering equipment design methods.
  • Design and implement SVC/STATCOM protection and control systems, including system control performance analysis.
  • Design and implement operation method of SVC/STATCOM system to meet customer specifications.
  • Plan and execute site commissioning tests for SVC/STATCOM systems, including prepare test plan, execute commissioning tests at the site. 
  • Review customer specifications and develop equipment and system design specifications, including interface with customer as necessary to ensure system and equipment design meets all performance requirements.
  • Coordinate and communicate local design efforts with MELCO power electronics engineers.
  • Review and interpret factory test results for power electronics equipment and systems.
  • Coordinate system design through implementation of equipment factory test and real-time digital simulator test at the factory in Japan.
  • Guide field engineers and service personnel with start-up, troubleshooting and repair of SVC and STATCOM systems.  Coordinate our response to issues in field by providing on time solutions to installation and testing issues.
  • Develop system Condition Monitoring of installed SVC and STATCOM equipment-analyze performance and failure data.
  • Implement and modify, as necessary, SVC and Statcom design procedures.
  • Assist and support Power Electronics Sales Team with bids and technical proposal development.
  • Monitor factory and field test plans to ensure adequate techniques and uniform, cost effective practices.
  • Establish and maintain design standards
  • Direct and review technical studies performed by other departments and outside services.
  • Propose and evaluate cost reduction initiatives for Power Electronics equipment and system designs.
  • Support and implement initiatives for new substation product/project offerings
  • Assist Power Electronics Product Line Manager as necessary
  • Know and support MEPPI Quality policies.
  • Propose and evaluate cost reduction initiatives with Power Electronics Manager.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical or Power Electronics Engineering plus 6 - 9 years’ technical experience including 3 - 5 years’ experience in SVC or STATCOM system engineering or equivalent education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of Power Electronics, Electrical Transmission Systems, Substation Equipment, 
  • Advanced knowledge of substation theory, protection and control, including fundamental concepts of feedback control.
  • Developed computer skills with emphasis on MSOffice products and understanding of CAD and engineering analysis software.

Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Ability to serve periodic training assignments in Japan.
  • Ability to travel to substation site for extended durations (2 months or more) on short notice during start-up and commissioning of SVC/STATCOM systems.
  • Ability to travel domestic and international up to 50% of the time as necessary.  Travel is separate from initial expatriate assignment and start-up.
  • Ability to use office equipment and tools, such as: PC, photocopier, fax machine, etc.
  • Ability to communicate with others to obtain cooperation, understanding and complete work.
  • Ability to read, understand, and create technical drawings and material.
  • Ability to analyze data.
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor high voltage substation environment.
