About the Division


Engineers working in our Power Systems Engineering Division (PSED) are placed in a progressive growth environment with expectations to learn and apply advanced concepts while contributing to work in the electromagnetic transients, load flow, and stability areas, using a variety of software platforms including EMTP-RV, PSCAD, PSLF, PSS\E, MATLAB, and Python, up to a total of 20 different software platforms. This valuable experience and knowledge base is complemented by avenues to participate and contribute to prestigious industry societies and travel opportunities within the continental United States and abroad, such as Japan.

 

The ongoing modernization of the electrical grid in the United States and world-wide has created many technical challenges in the integration of renewable resources, with advanced technologies in the face of changing generation and load characteristics. Transmission planning standards continue to increase in terms of stability, reliability, and security requirements. These trends have significant impacts on the transmission and distribution system as ‘Smart Grid’ and other grid modernization related concepts are planned and incorporated. As a result, advanced skills are required to perform studies to analyze the grid and its components in terms of power engineering, software, and communications concepts.


PSED engineers work with engineers in a number of disciplines across the industry, within MEPPI, and at utilities, including: software, mechanical, civil, project, application, design, sales, substation, apparatus, planning, relay/protection, and system operating engineers. System studies require knowledge across many disciplines with background in theoretical, practical/system operations, testing, equipment design, industry standards, and software areas.

Job Description

Perform and lead power systems engineering studies in the areas of electromagnetic transients, load flow, short circuit, transient stability, control design, equipment applications, and other technical areas for T&D applications.  Prepare and present technical reports.  Support and lead proposals in response to customer specifications, RFP / RFQ, and technical information requests for power systems engineering analysis.

  • Use, support others in the use, expand capabilities, and enhance efficiency for software such as ATP, EMTP, EMTP-RV, PSCAD, MATLAB, ASPEN, CAPE, CDEGS, and others to conduct insulation coordination, harmonic, short circuit, grounding, and other related studies for T&D equipment, including FACTS and HVDC.
  • Use, support others in the use, expand capabilities, and enhance efficiency for software such as CYME, Synergi, etap, Milsoft, and Plexos to perform studies on renewable resources, distributed energy resources, battery energy storage, relay and protection, monitoring, and smart grid related applications.
  • Use, support others in the use, expand capabilities, and enhance efficiency for software programs such as PSLF, PSS/E, DigSILENT, DSA Tools, Power World, and others to conduct load flow, transient stability, reactive planning, infrastructure re-enforcement, generator interconnection, and related studies, including FACTS and HVDC.
  • Support and lead generator testing, model development, and validation to standards.
  • Use, support others in the use, expand capabilities, and increase efficiency for C, C++, MATLAB, Java, Perl, Python, and others to enhance simulations and to model T&D equipment, including FACTS and HVDC.
  • Achieve and lead standard of quality and set example to meet schedules for simulation model development, analytics, and reporting.  Use and lead an engineered process throughout the stages of the study.
  • Develop business opportunities in support of the division objectives.
  • Prepare and present and support others in the preparing and presenting of technical reports to internal and external customers on schedule within quality standards, evidenced by minimized edits, minimized re-work, and positive feedback internally and externally.
  • Support and lead proposals in response to customer specifications, RFP / RFQ, and technical information requests.
  • Support and lead large-scale technical proposals for studies in various markets and in partnership with other firms.
  • Support and lead application engineering for other MEPPI divisions/departments.
  • Prepare and lead technical papers and articles for publication in professional society journals and trade magazines; and for presentation at professional society meetings, industry conferences, and trade exhibitions.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in electric power engineering, or equivalent education and experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Intermediate knowledge of electric power systems and equipment operation and control.
  • Intermediate knowledge of EROs, developers, and public and investor-owned utility business planning flow as related to initial feasibility, planning, engineering, implementation, and operations stages.
  • Intermediate organizational, presentation, communication, and technical writing skills required to communicate with customers and employees.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and on several projects simultaneously. 
  • Proficiency with the following programs and modeling tools:
  1. Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and related
  2. ATP, EMTP, EMTP-RV, PSCAD, MATLAB, ASPEN, CAPE, and CDEGS
  3. PSLF, PSS/E, DigSILENT, DSA Tools, Power World, and related
  4. CYME, Synergi, etap, Milsoft, and Plexos
  5. Economic software like PROMOD or MAPS
  6. C, C++, MATLAB, Java, Perl, Python, and others
  • Advanced knowledge of industry standards and guides (NESC, NERC, IEEE, IEC, and CIGRE).

Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.
